Vogue magazine's choice of cover - the image is stirring up controversy, with somecommentators decrying the photo as perpetuating racial stereotypes.
The picture of Basketball star LeBron James and Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen(who is, of German descent), is being labeled racist because it evokesthe stereotype of the black male ravaging the white female.

James strikes what some see as a gorilla-like pose, baring his teeth, with one hand dribbling a ball and the other around Bundchen's tinywaist.

Some even say LeBron's posture and pose evokes King Kong (which is actually the same stereotype).

my question:
when looking at the pic, was the 1st thing that popped into ur head "race?"
was it some other topic?
violence?
sex?
awkwardness?

...i didnt think of race. i thought it was a hot pic of two attractive ppl. they're playing a role here, according to their professions - an uber-energetic, strong athlete and a playful, pretty model.

PPL are too fucking obsessed with PC now. They try to find offensive shit in anything you say or do. IDIOTS.
the pic kinda jumped at me when i saw it at the store yesterday.... because i am so aware of subtle racial stereotypes...and i kinda could tell how it would stir controversy....i was a bit amazed at how big and bulky and strong he looked compared to her...like the stereotypical tall, athletic, strong black man ...but i DID NOT think it was offensive...actually i thought it was HOT...but that's just cuz i'm weird...
and yeah "race" jumps at you...but i thought it was kinda cool that they put 2 contrasts on one page: athlete and skinny, fragile, pretty white model...more like "both of them are hot, and deserve recognition"
I wonder what they would've said if it was a white big dude and thin, tiny black model.

I betcha they'd find something offensive.
yeah...either way u look at it...it could be interpreted offensive (due to race relations being so fucked up in this country and runnin so deep)
People just can't let go. They have to hold on to their stupid past...
it only looks offensive to people who would even think about these things. I mean who cares? So you see a black dude and a while chic on a cover of a magazine, whoopti du!! I am surprised people dont say that ying-yang sign stands for interacial relationships.
For 69 between two races Big Grin
I agree with Kostya, lets move on and forget! Should I be hating German people?
ok ...serioulsy...if u were ever a white chick walkin around with a big black dude, u would know that u make heads turn. trust me u would. in a bad or a good way...but a lot of pple notice race.
especially when race is all people judge u by...then it's just hard to not notice it.

whatever...not havin this debate right now...have way too much goin on as it is... but we could revisit some other time. and yeah u guys make some good points. i just don't agree..
yeah you right heads do turn when its black and white chick walking together. But its only cause its not your "typical" relationship. It would be exactly the same as if you would see an old man with a young girl walking together. But I wont make a big deal if I see Bruce Willis with Hanna Montana on a cover of a magazine.
i didn't think anything offensive when i looked......and after reading further....still no.....people need to chill out and enjoy their tingling sensations more often Wink
u can find summ offensive in anything, like gremlin said.
if u keep things 100% pc, life would be too boring.

LOL

who knows? maybe if we keep things less PC we could be more honnest with e/o re: such topics as race and gender etc my experience has been is that once it's not PC, it's offensive and ppl don't know how to talk out and work out differences without bein assholes about it. gotta find the middle ground.

Uhm.
If you want to be treated like a human. Act like a human, not like white trash, or bling blang gangster and stay away from people that dont.
Rednecks are stereotyped negativley b/c of their low income lifestyle.
Suburb whites are stereotyped too, as ding-dong yappies (and i 100% agree with that)
Blacks are stereotyped b/c of their flamboyant style and they are proud of it.
Just like rednecks are proud to be rednecks.

So, race issue is self inflected. I went about my day, talked to blacks, asians, whites, hispanics
and not until i opened this thread, that race issue was brought up.
slava's words of wisdom....ah...i can see clearly now!
