Teenage Iraqi girl who fell in love with BRITISH soldier in Basra is murdered by her own father in honour killing

An Iraqi teenage girl, a seventeen-year-old Rand Abdel-Qader, was brutally murdered by her father in an "honour killing" after she fell in love with a British soldier in Basra.
When her father learned she had been seen speaking to a foreigner he rushed home and butchered her, strangling and stabbing her while screaming that he was "cleansing his honour".
He was arrested, but Iraqi police took no action. His wife has since left him and is in hiding.
The Ministry of Defence was last night trying to trace thesoldier. Officials stressed he appeared to have done nothing wrong by befriending the girl.
Her funeral was done without any of the traditional mourning because she was deemed 'impure'. Her uncles were said to have spat on her body.
While there is no suggestion the two had any physical relationship, the case raises questions about the training given to British forces in understanding cultural values in a city where 47 women died in "honour killings" last year.
Wow... So what is there to do, man? How to even go about trying to better the situation? I still believe that bringing democracy and freedom to the opressed women and children of that region is the right thing to do. Bringing freedom to worship God in the way that you chose to do so and exercise a religion of your choice. Some may oppose it with violence and will hopefully get prosecuted to the full extand of their crimes. You can not negotiate with everybody, as this case clearly demonstrates.
Unfotrunately this is bound to happen. There are some hot men in the British army ... opposites attract. I am very upset by the fact that the men whom these girls fall in love or have sexual relations with do not protect them better.
how can they protect them better? they're serving in the military and can't just invite their friends/girlfriends to live at the base.
it's clearly not the british military's mistake. but that of a lunatic who is using religion as an excuse to power trip and act out of his psychopathic tendencies

It is not religius or islamic lunacy.
Imagine how you would feel about Russian or Ukrainian girl sleeping with German soldiers during WW2. US and British troops are no different than Germans used to be. They occupied sovereign country, killed a lot of man and now she just "fell in love"?
i didnt say it was islamic lunacy because islam as a religion has nothing to do with it. it's a man who chooses to use religion as an excuse for his actions.
ive never experienced war first-hand so i cant say for sure, but i have many older relatives who have. and i cant imagine a father killing, brutally, his daughter for falling in love with a soldier (and btw the political set-up here is very different from WWII G-R)

Well, it is but how do you know what this family had to go through during this occupation. Who knows, perhaps this guy had a good reasons to be upset. How can you judge without hearing both sides of the story.

thirdly, he hasnt been punished for what he has done.
There are actually good reasons to murder a child? Please enlighten me here as to the possible logical reason for mutilation and murder.
My point is: what you’ve read in the news might not be what exactly happened. Brainwashing is a powerful tool and it is done with info like this.
It could have been just an accident on which media put dramatic spin.
I've read the story about the woman who was held prisoner by her father for 24 years and raped repeatedly, causing her to have 7 children by him, 6 of who survived, and not even his own wife knew about his inexcusable behavior. I can't even imagine the trauma. Please don't tell me fathers are never wrong on what's best for their daughters.
And I’ve read stories about all kinds of maniacs in US so what. Does it make us all as bad?

I do somewhat agree with everything ou all said.
Here is the thing, Gaby you are totaly right there is no good reason to kill a child.
But so is the brainwashing comment, I agree that this whole thing might be a spin off, who knows what he killed her for? Maybe he is bipolar or crasy, or maybe it was self-defence, or maybe ...just maybe it was a religios thing. who said he was screaming "cleaning the honor"? if someone heard him and saw it why didn't they get involved?

it could have been......but honour killings of women are common in certain parts of the world...unfortunately...it's just that people dont really like to know about them....
it's not the first time i hear about a woman gettin stoned to death, killed, or executed for being "impure" (ie having an affair, premarital sex, being raped etc) .
I head enough of women being hit and abused and sometimes killed by their husbends here too, none of it are religion crimes really. So its just unfair to blame everything on religion in my opinion. It just seems like Republican party can't get enough of publicity for those so called religion crimes, specially right before the election. sometimes I think politics are worsen then religions.
By the way for those of you really in to the religion question, read " God is not Great", I highly recomend, it is an amazing book.

I dont think anyone's blaming everything on religion...it has been a long known fact tho that in certsin cultures and places it is common to kill women for things that are deemed "inappropriate" for women...this, i think, is very different from the type of physical and sexual abuse that you are refering to.

Its also been a known fact that this kind of behavior has been found innapropriate even in the countries it is practice in. So it is definately equivalent in my opinion to physical abused that happenes here everyday.
Why is it deemed inappropriate for women? Because Karan says so? Doesn't every religion say so? Christianity as well as Judaism has been known for stoning women for infedelity just few hundreeds years back. So of course maybe they have not moved socially as far as other religions has ( been one of the youngest religions anyways), but is that really it? One can blaim their religion or any religion, but bottom line is, we have no idea if this was a religion crime, or social crime or stupidity crime.

Yet I bet you it got the whole 5 seconds on TV and never made front page, because who cares?! Yet this can be made in to political agenda so here it is! everytime something like this happenes every news chanel broadcasts it as if it is a huge deal...ever wonder why? and if people can somehow be witnesses to it being a religios/cultural agend then why no one does anything to stop those crimes. His wife left him...why? Because he killed his daughter or because he killed the daugher to clean the reputation? I think she could care less about the reason. Okay so i am a little late on reading this but all i have to say IS F*&((*$^^&%& them. where do they get off! they should castrate the father!!! just cause! along with the uncles! man woman get treated like shit in all these countries. WTF?? that pisses me off! i am so sick of these twisted ass people and there twisted ass thoughts and warped beliefs! thats just as bad ass all those people following 1 man who ruins there countries. I.E Hitler, Osama, Nepoleon etc... i dont understand how 1 man can scare a nation. okay im going off on a seperate issue but its still the same thing. fight back! ugghhh it just urks me! okay im done.

Look at your own president. I'd say he's done it very well. Watch and learn.
