Outcry over plans for a 'tasteless' Hitler waxwork in Berlin's Madame Tussauds

Plans by Madame Tussauds to install an Adolf Hitler waxwork at their new Berlin museum have been branded 'tasteless and embarrassing' by memorial groups.

[...] The man who ordered the extermination of millions of Jews should not be shown in the same style as popstars, statesmen andfamous soccer players.

Johannes Tuchel, from the Gedenkstaette Deutscher Widerstand, a memorial for opponents of the Nazi regime, said: 'It's tasteless. A waxworks museum is meant to entertain and to amuse. It's not appropriate to have a Hitler figure there.'

Uwe Neumaerker from the foundation for Germany's central Holocaust memorial site told the Berliner Zeitung daily: "This is all about producing a shock effect and attracting clients."

However a Madame Tussauds spokesman said Hitler deserved a place in the museum due to his impact on German history.

Natalie Ruoss said: 'Our surveys show people want to see him because he belongs to Germany's past.'
he's a tyran, but a huge part in history. and it's not like they'r making a momument of him or anything.

he's a HUGE part of history. i don't see a problem.
agree with Zu
People like to bitch... some people do it because they are plainly bored.

There's a statue of G.W. Bush in the museum, he started the Iraqi war - why noone complains?
well.....bush and hitler are two different things, but that's a whole different story....

but i'd have to agree....as long as he is not glamorized, he needs a place in the museum...because he was a huge part of european history...albeit a very dark part

The war in Iraq was a constitutional war that was proposed by the George Bush administration and was voted in by the overwelming majority of the congress. The war was started against a man who claimed to have weapons of mass distruction, have used them in the past to kill close to 300,000 innocent people, of whom the vast majority were women and children, and who have invaided a country and terrorised the region for decades.

If anything, American troops took out the "Hitler" of our time, while expressing the readiness to stay in the region as long as necessary to rebuilt the society.

I do agree with you in a sense about people liking to stir stuff up though. I do not approve of a Hitler statue, so I will not be going to this wax museam and I hope that others to the same.

In all actuality, you will not see me at any museam unless there is Shishkin, especially "Mishki v Sosnovom Boru", on display. Now, THERE is something we can all admire.

Bush is Hitler?
i mean you may oppose the war / be a liberal / not like Bush personally, but this statement is just ludicrous.

Woha! Calm down sista... Smile
All I meant is lot's and lot's of ppl don't like Bush, but they do not complain about his statue in the museum.
some cities still have monuments to Lenin as well. i personally think that it was wrong to destroy them after the fall of the cccp. they, as well, were a huge part of our history, and should have been put in storage places instead.
I do not see a problem.
If anything I beleive it will bring more awarness, just because something was bad/horrible/tragic, doen't mean it shouldn't be remebered. Its a good reminder to everyone as to what happened, and maybe people will think twice before leting something like that happene again.

What exactly is the problem? Hitler is a man who greatly impacted German history, and world history no less! Even if it was an impact in the most inhuman way it is something that needs to be remembered, be it at a wax museum or another museum. Why is it shocking that they would think to include his likeness in a German museum? I don't see how. It is still a museum. ("A building, place, or institution devoted to the acquisition, conservation, study, exhibition, and educational interpretation ofobjects having scientific, historical, or artistic value.")

It's not like the wax figure is Hitler himself, any more than his likeness forever captured in pictures. Why don't we erase his likeness from all museums and history books while we're at it? The man is dead and is most certainly rotting in hell if there ever was one, and I'm sure that Tussauds will not be making a shrine to worship him. It's history and however it should be preserved, it needs to be. The atrocities he stood for should be remembered always as to not be repeated. He was a monster, and I'm sure he will be displayed as one.

yeah i agree.....an entire denial of history, to include erasing visual images of those who have killed and tortured millions, will only lead us to forget about what's been done.
making a wax statue oh hitler is not the same as making one of leonardo da vinci...nor will his statue be viewed or approached in the same way....if anything, seeing it may lead some of us to reflect on history and those whose lives were lost....
